Converters

Converters are a type of building block for the Map and Model layers.

The converter holds values for constants, defines external inputs to the model, calculates algebraic relationships, and serves as the repository for graphical functions. In general, it converts inputs into outputs.

The default converter type is the standard converter. You can also use summing converter, which adds together the values for a set of model entities without the need of drawing connectors from inputs to the converter. This special converter type can be helpful when you are creating summary report indices and the like.

Note: You can specify a converter as a summing converter only when the converter has no inputs.

To place a converter on the digram

  1. On the Map or Model layer toolbar, click the converter tool.
  2. The standard converter is the default converter type. To place a summing converter in your model, click and hold the converter tool on the toolbar and then select the summing converter from the list that appears.
  3. Click the diagram to place the converter.
  4. To edit the properties of the converter, select the converter, and then select the panel for the properties you want to edit.

Tip: Double-click the converter icon to automatically select the default field for the entity on the currently displayed panel.

For more information about placing, naming, and editing converters, see Working with building blocks.

Tip: To select the size of the converter icons for the entire model, or to select to display converter names only, use the "Converter" options in the Model Preferences dialog box.
